Within the first 30 km or so of the mountain range, the peaks are commonly at elevations of 3,000 to 6,000 ft. The slopes are 30 to 45 degrees, which is relatively steep. The subsurface materials observed (often at landslide cuts) were limestone and conglomerates. Rainfall in the area is common, and vegetation covers all mountain slopes except where denuded by the earthquaketriggered landslides. There were more than 12,000 rock falls/deep seated slides and more than 500 debris flows. 5 shows a map of the seismicity in the region since 1990.
Here, manmade riverbanks with retaining walls commonly experienced 2 to 3 in. of lateral and downhill movements (as observed for about 1,500 ft. of the 4,000 ft. of embankment that we walked along). The mountainous zones visited by the ASCE team did not appear to have been glaciated within the last 100,000 years or so. There are infrequent snowfalls at the valley floors, and snow avalanches were not reported to occur in the areas visited. Had the local temperatures been somewhat cooler, resulting in yearly heavy snow accumulations with resultant avalanches, the building stock might have been located outside the most common steep slope areas.
