If I passed, I was satisfied. I had just turned eighteen when I entered the University of Utah, eager to learn and hoping to take part in extracurricular activities. My speech teacher was a radical, a socialist, and a cynic, ridiculing religion, patriotism, and parental respect. I admired him and tried to talk and act in such a way as to make him notice me, so that he would think that I, too, was a Modern and a Thinker. I was soon invited to visit the Radical Club meeting and was able to draw attention by quoting Judge Ben B.
