At the time of our visit, it held 669 inmates. It contained single rooms, cubicles, and open dormitories with 54 or 65 inmates, with some variation in space within the singles (48 versus 60 sq ft) and dorms (49 versus 59 sq ft per inmate). The cubicles were similar in design to those at EI Reno and provided 50 sq ft of space. It should also be noted that different housing units varied in the programs to which inmates were assigned. For singles, these units were industry, alcohol abuse, and life skills.
This may have been related to the greater amount of space available in units with eight-man cells. Not surprisingly, units housing violent inmates produced greater feelings of crowding and more reports of sleeping problems. The jail studies are consistent with our prison studies in showing that social density, but not spatial density, is an important factor in inmate reactions to their housing. We failed to find differences in blood pressure, and this is consonant with the lack of blood pressure effects in most of our prison studies.
Several other findings suggest that this is not the case. Texarkana contained several architecturally "special" dorms that housed about 10 more inmates than the regular dorms, but were a little more spacious and were segmented into three visually separated bays. The residents of the special dorms also had mostly single bunks in contras~ to FIGURE 4-4. One segment of the "special" dorms at Texarkana FCI.
