Behle has had a long-term interest in the birds of Zion National Park and vicinity, and his support for this book, as well as the earlier one that I wrote with my friend and colleague Dennis Carter, is much appreciated. The Canyon Wren painting on the cover and all the pen-and-ink sketches were done by Mimi Wolf. Her 35 illustrations greatly enhance this book, and I am most grateful to her for her extraordinary talent and cooperative spirit. Also, I am grateful to Howard Rollin for the four full-page paintings of Zion Park's principal bird communities.
But once I agreed to undertake the task, principal support was provided by Natural Resource Specialist Sheri Fedorchak. During my visit to Zion National Park in September and October 1995, when I was gathering information for this book (actually a rewrite of the 1965 book), I was permitted to examine Jerome's notes and manuscript. And Jewel Gifford, Jerome's sister, graciously allowed me to utilize his material with no restrictions. This new book, therefore, is largely the result of Jerome's love for birds and his significant efforts to document their presence and status.
