Tremain stared after him for a moment, taking long drags on his cigarette, contemplating the significance of the sailor’s last statement.

Men began to emerge on deck from every hatch and door, some passing damage control equipment, some tending to the wounded, some moving the dead, some grabbing tools and heading below to try to salvage the Chevalier’s rapidly flood­ ing engine rooms. The ship was listing heavily to starboard, and Tremain suspected the collision with the O’Bannon had ripped her hull away below the waterline. He recognized the ship’s executive officer gathering men on deck in an attempt to jettison any loose equipment from the starboard side to give up some weight in an effort to keep her from capsizing.
